The Beauty of Staycations

Show of hands. How many people here would love to pick up and leave on a plane in search of sun, fun, and adventure in the middle of their semester?

How many of you feel that you deserve a much-needed break?

Now, who reading this is stressed out by the very thought of what a vacation will do to their credit card bill right now?

Who looking at these words just simply does nt have the time?

Congratulations! If you answered yes to any of the above questions, chances are you are a living breathing student with many of the same challenges as your peers- meaning your money, time, and energy are pretty tight, so a real and proper vacation isn’t in the cards right now.

Well have no fear, I have a solution for you. And that is, the beautiful thing called the Staycation.

Remember when you were a kid, the coolest thing a person your age could do for their birthday was host a sleepover? It was an evening full of eating junk food, watching funny movies, playing truth or dare, and most importantly, hanging with your friends. Well that’s pretty much what a staycation is. You go over to a friend’s house for a night or two and just. chill. out.

I know it sounds deceptively simple, but They. Are. Great.

You get to relax, they’re cheap, you’re with the people you love, and if you live in the GTA, chances are you have friends you can visit in neighborhoods you’ve never made it to before. I recently enjoyed a staycation in Richmond Hill.

Now what does this have to do with wellness?

We all need to take a break occasionally, escape from our daily routine, and recharge. But as I said, as a student it can be a challenge. This is an easy workaround that can give you the boost you need to tackle the week ahead.

Here are some Ideas for how to have the best Staycation Ever, based on some of my own experiences and favourite activities (bias I know)!!

Make a Charcuterie Board

What’s great about a Charcuterie Board is that the hardest part about them is pronouncing their name out loud. FYI it’s [shahr-koo-tuhree]. Other than that, they are pretty easy, and you can customize them so that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Check out the ones below for advice on how to make your own and how to stick to certain dietary needs, including a healthy and vegan friendly one.

Wear Really Cute Pyjamas

What’s cuter than a photo of you and your friends having an adult sleepover? Answer: A photo of you and your friends wearing adorable matching pyjamas, onesies, themed outfits, etc. at an adult sleepover. Here are some ideas for cute things you can wear as well as a tutorial on how you can make your own! Feel free to make it a craftcation!

Have Breakfast the Next Morning

Sometimes the morning after a staycation can be kind of rough. I mean, you might be a tad hungover and it’s over isn’t it? Well not if you extend it past breakfast. Whether you go out to your favourite local spot or have a make your own bagel and mimosa bar, breakfast with your friends is the perfect way to end a staycation and fuel your day ahead. Here are a few ideas for how to get creative and a recommendation for one of my own favourite spots in Toronto.

PSSSST: If you’re stumped on where to go, I am a huge and I mean huge fan of Sunnyside Grill. They make omelettes bigger than your head, have several locations, and are currently offering $10 gift cards. Seriously, check them out!

Plan for Activities

Whether you and your friends play a game of What Do You Meme or Beanboozled, games can be a great way to get everyone having fun and out of their heads for a bit.

I am going to leave the meaning of this one completely up to you, but personally I love a fancy looking drink and one too many bowls of ice-cream larger than my head…with whip crème and chocolate sauce on top. Maybe pizza is your thing. Whatever it may be, treat yourself!!

I would love to hear what you like to do on your own staycations. As always feel free to share in the comments below.

A big thank you to all the bloggers, writers, chefs, crafters who I’ve linked images to. You can also visit my Pinterest for links to all the images posted here, as well as for other DIY and fun ideas.

P.S. Here are my friends and I at our own staycation!
